The Wire Reposts

The Wire

Season Four of The Wire is in full swing, and we’ve been sleeping on it here at Ten Thousand Things. To get back into the fray, here’s a roundup of previous Wire-related posts, all with temporarily re-activated music links:

Stelios Kazantzidis: Efuge Efuge

Positive Black Soul: Respect the Nubians

Lorem Ipsum: Wax Music Box

Michael Franti: Rock The Nation

The J.B.’s: Paradise

I am the music supervisor for The Wire, and I also wrote the theme music that plays over the end credits, a piece titled “The Fall”. I’ve been receiving dozens of emails from people asking where they can get a copy of The Fall, and I have to reiterate here: that track is not available anywhere, and it has never been released. We are saving it for The Wire soundtrack, which we hope will be released next year along with the recently announced Season Five. In response to the deluge of requests, I have made a page explaining the situation here.

Check back in the coming days for more posts about The Wire. The official site for the show is here. The Wikipedia page for the show is stuffed with fascinating minutiae and can be found here. There’s a very readable new unnoficial blog about the show called Heaven and Here. There was an article about my work on the show in the Baltimore City Paper recently, which you can find here.

I love The Wire, it is possibly one of the best programs on television. I love the music selection too, you are doing a great job. Any particular songs from the show that stand out as your favorites?

Comment by Shawn Henehan 10.03.06 @ 5:33 pm

I really like the song The Fall. Some of the songs used in The Wire: The Game is Real seemed to have a similar feel to it. Did you do the music for the documentaries promoting season 4? What were those songs called?

Comment by Dony SF 10.03.06 @ 8:26 pm

I have a question for you, Blake. What’s up with the scene at the very end of Hot Shots? Where is the music coming from? Avon’s Cell? And why Cisco Kid?

Comment by dronkmunk 10.03.06 @ 10:07 pm

Shawn - too many favorites to list here, but the ones I’ve posted are certainly among them. Also, I’m very excited by all the local Baltimore stuff we’re using in Season 4, which is only just beginning to be heard in episode 4 and on.

Dony - I wasn’t involved with the music for the promo docs, and to be honest I thought the music in the one I saw was crap. Can’t remember which one it was, but the music seemed like typical TV drivel. HBO promos are done by a seperate entity.

Dronkmunk - I haven’t seen that episode in a long time, but I remember the music being sourced to Avon’s cell, although we cheated a little bit with how loud it was played and how it changed dynamically as we move in the hallway, giving it a slightly unrealistic but dramatic build towards the end. Thom Zimny the editor picked that track and we all liked it for no special reason. Not every single track has to have the weight of theory behind it, sometimes they just play. We used another track from War (Me & Baby Brother) playing in the SUV that picks Avon up when he is released from jail early in Season 3, so I guess Avon is a War fan.

Ok, so have you all decided what kind of music Marlo listens to? I don’t think he has ever played music in his truck. I mean, even Chris likes to lean wit it! Is marlo so inhuman that he has no musical taste?

Comment by dronkmunk 10.21.06 @ 10:38 pm

hi ! first , congratulations on your job on The Wire , the music blends with the show perfectly
here is my request : could you be kind enough to give me the name of the band /song title used as the end music for season 1 ?

Comment by spinefox 10.25.06 @ 5:32 pm

Hey rook, asshat, he wrote that shit, can’t you read?

Comment by Giveyougoodpizza 10.26.06 @ 3:57 am

Spinefox -

The end music for season 1 (I’m assuming you mean the music that plays over the end credits) is the same as all the other seasons. It’s a piece called “The Fall” which I wrote and performed. It’s not available in full anywhere at this time, although we hope to include it on a planned soundtrack release along with Season 5.

Love the Wire and love the music. what’s your favorite version of the opening theme?

Comment by ricardo montalban 10.29.06 @ 9:56 pm

Mr. Montalban -

Hard to pick a favorite… at first I wasn’t so hot on this year’s, but at the moment I think it might be my favorite. They really are all good in their own way, and each feels right for the season it plays for. I hope we can maintain the standard next year!

Hey Balke, you could answer my question real quick? I got skipped..

“Ok, so have you all decided what kind of music Marlo listens to? I don’t think he has ever played music in his truck. I mean, even Chris likes to lean wit it! Is marlo so inhuman that he has no musical taste?”

Comment by dronkmunk 10.31.06 @ 2:58 pm

Marlo? Marlo doesn’t care about trifling things like music. If Chris puts some music on while they drive around, fine. What do you think he would listen to?

One spot of dangerous ground in music supervision is caricaturing people, turning them into stereotypes. Maybe Marlo has a thing for Abba, or Frank Sinatra? He wouldn’t listen to it in public, but at home, after hours? In season 1 I tried to have Daniels listening to Ali Farka Toure in the privacy of the detail office, but it was shot down and replaced with Duke Ellington’s “Fleurette Africaine”, which was, in fact, a better choice.

Comment by Blake 10.31.06 @ 4:52 pm

actually , I meant the song used right before the end credits , sorry for not being explicit enough !

Comment by spinefox 11.03.06 @ 1:47 pm

Spinefox -

Oh, ok, I guess you mean the montage song at the end of the last episode of Season 1? That’s “Step By Step” by Jesse Winchester.

For your consideration, Blake

Comment by dronkmunk 11.05.06 @ 6:59 pm

I think marlo listens to historical speeches by Stalin and Mussolini and probably the audio book version of The Prince.

Got to thank you for turning me on to the meters, also

Comment by dronkmunk 11.14.06 @ 5:26 pm

I may be your only 65-year-old grandma fan, but I can’t help telling you how much The Fall means to me. It is one of the most haunting and complex pieces of music I’ve heard. There had better be a soundtrack or, much as I love The Wire, this will be one angry granny.

Comment by UpstateKaren 11.27.06 @ 3:32 pm

Love the show, love the music that makes it so real…On this note is it possible to submit independent music to you Blake for consideration to be used on The Wire?

Comment by GoSox 12.30.06 @ 12:03 am

This might not be the best place to ask, but I’ve been trying for months to track down the name of the song at the end of episode 29, where Bodie, Charles and Cutty are all at the house party. It sounds like some DJ technics stuff I’ve heard. Is it it’s own track? thanks

Comment by joshua 03.29.07 @ 3:42 pm

The song at the end of 29 is “Neva Eva Extra” by DJ Technics. You should be able to find a version of it at his site:

Hi Blake….the only good thing about an episode of The Wire ending is your wonderful music. I look forward to it every time…..and each time I hear something new in the layers and nuances that weave through the piece. I can’t wait for the soundtrack to be released so I can hear it whenever I want….and I hope that the full track is much longer! Recently I noticed that the background music for a cool new ad for Dassault Systems had some similarities to your sound….is this one of yours too?
Big fan in Boston……Ruthanne

Was wondering about the scene in season 4, and actually I forget the episode it might be 3 or 4, but its the scene when the kid rolls up on bodie and gives him the package and says “Don’t mess with Marlo’s money.” I know that is some B-more house but please can I get the artist/song title?
Thanks B

Hey GoSox……GOSOX!!!!!!! Love those Ortiz home runs.

Blake…..where are you? Do you know when Season 4 will be released on DVD? I’m addicted and need my fix………

Desperately trying to remember the name of that old funky song that plays at the end of one of the Season 1 episodes. It plays out of McNulty’s car radio when he sees some hoods, shouts, runs and slips. Help (please)?

Comment by Brick 04.23.07 @ 2:46 pm

Blake the song at the end of season 3,I think it’s Fast Train and who is the artist.

Comment by Stan 10.16.07 @ 2:53 pm

Fast Train is by Solomon Burke.

Brick - McNulty’s car radio song is “Love is Strange” by Micky & Sylvia.

Hello:

We wanted to find out if you are looking for music for the Wire?

Comment by Linda Sharlin 01.04.08 @ 12:21 am

Hi. I bought an Albannach cd yesterday, and I am almost positive I heard the song “Claymores” playing on the wire quite awhile back. Tell me I’m not crazy….

Comment by cheryl 02.18.08 @ 8:34 am

hi blake ..I’m sorry to see the wire coming to an end what a great ending when marlo took back the corner…granny was right ..the fall is a very haunting melody i just wish you would cut a longer version..say with a nice violin and guitar solo.. well if not i’ll just have to loop it over and over ..
congratulation on a great theme song

I am trying to find out the sing title and artist of the song that plays near the end of the final episode, of the first season, when all the scenes are shone of the drug trade continuing as usual, ending with McNaulty in the boat. Can anyone help me out with this? If so, please email me directly. Thanks.

Comment by Daniel 03.26.08 @ 11:50 am

This comment is in regards to the song that plays at the end of the credits after every episode of The Wire. Does this not sound familiar like a sample from some song from the 80’s??? Also for any “Rick Ross” fans out there if you listen to his song “Blow” off of the “Port of Miami” album the melody is VERRRYYY much ALIKE. anybody agree???

Comment by c-dawg 06.20.08 @ 1:03 am

‘The Fall’ is an incredible piece of music. Fits the tone and themes of the show like a glove. Top class listening.

This track is killing me. It’s about 40 minutes in on episode 1 of series 3. Just a snatch of heavenly p-funk being played in the car. Please help!

Comment by Sion 01.29.10 @ 12:34 pm

in season 2, the episode “hard cases”, mcnulty is cruising around looking for omar, when he finds bubbles instead. the song playing in his car sounds like an a song from the 50’s, a female singer, who sings, “come back, come back, come back, i’ve had enough.” could you tell me what the song is?

Comment by chad 03.20.10 @ 4:21 pm

Looking for the same information as chad. Season 2, episode 4 where McNulty spots Bubbles and his friend getting on the bus to go shoplifting.
