Caving to popular demand, today we’re spinning some more Senegalese hip-hop. Positive Black Soul are the most succesful of their peers and are the only crew from Dakar to have had a major North American tour. This track comes from Salaam, their 1996 international breakout CD. Make sure you give the song a listen past the one-minute mark, as it changes radically at that point.
As a footnote, I’ll mention that this was used in The Wire, season one, episode six, when D’Angelo was getting dressed. Normally on The Wire verisimilitude is king, but editor Thom “Golden Ears” Zimny plucked this out of my stack of CDs, cut it into the scene, and there it stayed, thereby causing money to flow from a major US corporation (Time Warner) to a Senegalese hip-hop group. Cool.
You can cause money to flow in the same direction by buying Salaam here. There’s also the import of Run Cool here.
Here’s the Positive Black Soul official site (in French). And if you like this stuff you should make sure and check Benn loxo du taccu for more music.
