Heavily influenced by Otis Redding, Etta James, and Cuban rhythms, singer Ismael Lo brought this song to international acclaim when it appeared in the soundtrack to Almodovar’s 1999Todo Sobre Mi Madre. Lo usually performs with a 12-piece band, but here he’s mostly alone with his guitar and harmonica, delivering one of the most nostalgic, yearning songs ever recorded.
Tadieu Bone (sometimes spelled Tajabone) is a Musilim holiday celebrated in Senegal with a feast, during which the children go from house to house entertaining the adults with singing and dancing and are rewarded with money or snacks. The Wolof lyrics are roughly translated as
Tadieu Bone
We’re going to Tadieu Bone
The angel Abdou Jabar is coming from the skies to your soul
He will ask you “Did you pray?”
He will ask you “Did you fast?”
He is coming to your soul
This version of the song appears on several CDs, among them The Balladeer Ismael Lo The Best Of, a good (though incomplete) collection which you can buy here. A slightly different, equally beautiful version of the song appears on the excellent soundtrack CD to Almodovar’s film, which is also available on DVD.
