More Info About The Ten Thousand Things

What is this, anyway?

It’s a music blog curated by Blake Leyh. Many days a new mp3 file is posted along with some information and a couple of links to buy more related music.

Isn’t it illegal to upload/download mp3 files?

Well, it’s a gray area. My feeling is that a blog like this has negligible effect on any of the rights holders of the music involved. If anything, it’s a positive effect. If you own rights in any of the music here and would like me to remove the file, please just ask and I will take it down.

Can I get a copy of that great tune you had here last week?

No. One of the ways I limit my liability, save bandwidth, and try to be respectful of music rights issues is to only post these files for a limited time.

My (band/label/girlfriend) has a really cool song. If I send it to you as an email attachment, will you post it on The Ten Thousand Things?

No.

Are there any other music blogs like this that you recommend?

Here are a few that I like:

Soul Sides
Cocaine Blunts
Benn loxo du taccu
Sticker Shock
Ear Fuzz
hippocampusmusic
The Captain’s Crate
No Condition Is Permanent

Where does the title of the site come from?

The title of the site comes from the Tao Te Ching via John Cage. The number 10,000 is common in Eastern philosophy and writing, where it represents the infinite. “The Ten Thousand Things” is a common phrase found in Taoist and Buddhist writings to connote the material diversity of the universe.

Lao Tzu says:

Tao produced the One.
The One produced the two.
The two produced the three.
And the three produced The Ten Thousand Things.

John Cage planned a large series of works in the early 1950’s which were never finished, and which were collectively referred to by Cage at the time as The Ten Thousand Things.

The title of this blog has nothing to do with the band called The Ten Thousand Maniacs, an unfortunate reference which didn’t occur to me until someone asked about it long after the domain name was paid for.
